How do the language and visuals used in books trigger amusement in readers? This session will explore the various types of humour present in books for children, from early years to young adult, across time and cultures. The speakers will also share lists of funny books, their own favourites as well as others.

Kate London

Kate London (Australia)

Kate has a teaching qualification and a Masters in children’s literature from the UK. She has lived in Germany, Spain and the UK for the last 10 years while working and studying in the field of education (Instituto de Empresa Business School, Spain and the University of Cambridge, UK). She is also an executive committee member of the International School Library Network in Singapore, which supports teacher-librarians and organises the annual Red Dot Book Awards for students.

Katie Day

Katie Day (US/Singapore)

Katie Day holds a Masters in children’s literature from the UK and a Masters in library science and secondary teaching qualification from Australia. She has worked as a teacher-librarian in Thailand (Dulwich Int’l College and NIST) and Singapore (United World College of Southeast Asia and Tanglin Trust School). Katie is an executive committee member of the International School Library Network in Singapore, which supports teacher-librarians and organises the annual Red Dot Book Awards for students.

Low Ying Ping

Ying Ping is the bestselling author of the Mount Emily novels, a middle grade/young adult fantasy series featuring time travel and friendship, as well as Prophecy of the Underworld, a quirky and full-filled middle grade adventure story. Her novels have won the Singapore Book Awards and have been shortlisted for other prizes such as the Hedwig Anuar Children’s Book Award and the Popular Readers’ Choice Award.
