Asian Festival of Children’s Content

The GIF Challenge is an annual collaboration between Puttnam School of Film & Animation (LASALLE College of the Arts) and Singapore Book Council. For this edition, participants may choose to accept EITHER the GIF Challenge OR the Comic Cover Challenge.

Participants had two days (26–27 Feb) to create either an animated GIF or a comic cover illustration based on a selection of short texts provided by authors from the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) 2022.

The Extracts

Little Mimic’s Superpower

In the ocean’s belly, a hatchling broke free.
Little Mimic wriggled his body and stretched his arms.
He looked around his watery world with wide-eyed wonder.

Polka dots flashed before his eyes. Whoosh!
“Spotted that!” Little Mimic said, breaking out in dots.
Stripes crossed his path. Swoosh!
“Lined up!” Little Mimic cried, showing off his lines.
Rainbow colours streaked above him. Swish!
“Colouring out!” Little Mimic gushed, bursting into multi-colour.
“Wow-whee! But what’s the point of this superpower in me?”

Out of the blue, a damselfish nipped at him. Snap!
“Yikes!” Little Mimic yelped, darting into a coral reef.
The damselfish swam back and forth, searching for him.

A snake slithered out of the sand towards the damselfish.
The damselfish trembled and took off.
Little Mimic froze. He captured the scary scene in his memory. Click click!
And he stayed still as stony coral for ages.

Lion Boy and Fire Girl

Charm whispered, “Don’t let our lion catch fire! Lean into me!”

Obediently, Apple curved himself until his head was a hair’s breadth from her chest. Her arms rotated powerfully over and around him, her body giving off a sweet scent of sweat and soap. He edged backwards while she continued to press forward with big strides. In front of a live and an online audience of millions, they danced an intricate pattern over the naked flames as if they were engaging in some ancient courtship ritual.

With the mesmerising drumbeats keeping pace with his heart, Apple registered two indubitable truths. One, Charm definitely had breasts. And, as Apple tilted his head to gaze up at her aquiline profile, he could no longer deny the second truth. He finally believed Charm’s claim about boys being attracted to her. Like them, he had fallen irrevocably and completely under her spell.

Sing A Song of Hawker Food

Humpty Dumpty’s Breakfast
Humpty Dumpty wondered aloud,
“What should I eat on my day out?
Butter and Kaya on crispy hot Toast.
Starting my day with two of those.”
Humpty Dumpty munched on his bread.
“Should I order more food?” he said.
“What’s that I see? What’s that on the menu?
Soft-boiled Eggs?! Never! No, thank you!”

Pengembaraan Tim (Tim's Adventure)

One night…

YAWN!

Hey! Come on. We have to get to the sea QUICKLY!

Who’s there?

Oh! My name is Zana. I am a crab. Can’t you see my BIG claws?

This is the JOURNEY of a thousand miles of a young sea turtle named Tim.

WAH! URGH! WOAH!

After several attempts at fighting the waves, Tim finally makes it to the open sea.

WAAAHH!

Who are you?

My name is Yan. I am a leafy seadragon.

Hi! My name is Tim. I am a sea turtle.

My name is Syirah. I am a shrimp.

Watch out! Those are sharks. We must always be CAREFUL in the depths of the ocean.

Woah! Who are you?

Hi there, cute one! My name is Pahaw. I am a whale.

Oh! You are HUGE! I thought you were a rock! Good bye!

Tim continues with his journey.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

Hmph! How rude!

COUGH! COUGH!

Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and months turn into years, Tim continues with his journey.
