[Updated venue!] Comics as a Powerful Tool to Develop Curiosity in Kids for Science

Children are naturally drawn to comics, making them an effective tool for sparking curiosity in science. This session will discuss the creation of imaginative stories centered around three families as the main characters who embark on global adventures to explore key concepts aligned with the primary and secondary science syllabus. Find out more on how story-driven provocations and everyday objects can be utilised to facilitate inquiry-based learning.

Harel Yee (Singapore)
Harel has had a keen interest in science since young, reading far beyond his age. He has taken part in and won robotics and science competitions locally and internationally. He taught himself 3D printing and has trained over 100 educators in the use of 3D printing for education. He is currently reading Engineering at SUTD, due to graduate in 2024. He is co-author of the Adventures in Energy book published by World Scientific, ensuring that fun facts and resources will interest young readers and arouse their curiosity to learn more.

Sharon Ngoi (Singapore)
Sharon Ngoi is Chief Learning Officer of a preschool chain, an educator for over 35 years, former HOD Science in a primary school, former principal of a leading kindergarten, education entrepreneur, lecturer, author, and speaker.

Yee Jenn Jong (Singapore)
Jenn Jong is the founder and former CEO of a leading elearning company who has also started and mentored several education and education technology companies. He has authored two books on the Straits Times Best-seller list, winning the Popular Bookstore Readers’ Choice top five non-fiction book award. He has been on the advisory boards of MOE schools for over 10 years and is the recipient of two MOE’s Service to Education awards, and was also a member of Singapore’s 12th parliament and a former teaching staff at the National University of Singapore.

Moderator Ruth Wan (Singapore)
Having worked in public communications and publishing for 25 years, Ruth is currently the Publisher at World Scientific Education, where she acquires children’s books on Asian and STEM themes, while managing a team of editors, designers and illustrators.
Ruth is also the author of the bestselling Timmy & Tammy preschool series, which has sold over 400,000 copies. The series has had the honour of being given to all Singaporean babies born in 2015, the year Singapore celebrated 50 years of independence. The series was also presented to Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana by the President of Singapore to commemorate the royal birth.
Ruth is passionate about encouraging children to love reading and about supporting the local arts.
