In this turbulent time, readers are affected by different natural and man-made disasters. This presentation will discuss how picture books address the plights of the world, the conflicting emotions of the suffered, and humans’ resilience and recovery. These books are often inclined to encourage empathy and understanding among different parties.

Michelle Chan

Michelle Chan (Hong Kong)

Michelle Chan's research includes Victorian Literature, Fantasy, and Children’s Literature, with a recent focus on healing and picture books, fairy tales, translating visual narratives, and transmedia presentation of children’s literature. Most of her works concern how children’s texts are received and reinterpreted in contemporary society. She has recently received funding to promote Asian children’s literature, including Korean picture books and Hong Kong children’s literary history, respectively. 

Priti Sharma

Moderator Priti Sharma (Singapore)

Priti Sharma Devata is the Managing Editor at Epigram Books. She also edits fiction and nonfiction picture books, early readers and middle-grade novels. She has more than 21 years of experience teaching and developing language and literary courses at the tertiary level. Her areas of focus have been children’s literature and postcolonial literature.
