My Singapore Childhood

24 May 2025 (Sat) | 2:30pm—3:00pm
English | CTPL Submarine Room

Written by Claudia Ju
Illustrated by Thin Thin

My Singapore Childhood is a collection of children’s poems illustrated to depict a little boy’s daily life in Singapore. The boy enjoys simple pleasures: watching the rain fall and the sunrise, playing with mimosas along the walkways, inhaling the fresh scent after the rain, and feeding fish in the canals. He loves gazing at the moon at night and the clouds during the day and constantly craves chicken rice and kaya toast.

Through his eyes, the boy shares his Singapore story with a deep sense of love and belonging. His observations reflect the experiences of many children growing up in this peaceful nation today, similar to the older generation reminiscing about their old Kampong lives. The poems, narrated from the boy and his Mummy’s perspectives, evoke nostalgia and form collective memories for a new generation of Singaporeans.

This enchanting book is available in English and Chinese editions. In addition, Chinese audio versions of the poems are available on Spotify’s My Singapore Childhood channel, which serves ass a free resource for learning Chinese.
