Welcome to AFCC 2025!

As a child, I eagerly awaited each new issue of the Chinese manhwa 《儿童乐园》(Children’s Playground) and 《南洋儿童》(Nanyang Children). I devoured these weekly comics, losing myself in their colourful stories and vibrant illustrations. Through them, I discovered new worlds that took me away from my HDB playground haunts, and just as importantly, new words that expanded my Chinese vocabulary with every page. These early reading experiences were not only a source of joy but also a gateway to imagination, empathy, and learning.

This year, the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) 2025 celebrates the theme of “Discovery”. In today’s VUCA world – far from the halcyon days of my childhood – the role of children’s literature is more critical than ever. In our Opening Keynote session, “Discovering the Power of Children’s Literature”, we will explore the enduring importance of children’s books as tools for cultivating resilience and also empowering children to navigate an increasingly interconnected yet unfamiliar world. At the festival, we will also look at how books can foster curiosity, empathy and a lifelong love of reading and learning – qualities that are vital to their growth and self-discovery.

This year, we are very excited to showcase Korea as our Country of Focus. Hans Christian Andersen Award 2022 winner Suzy Lee, one of the 10 Korean authors and illustrators who will be featured at AFCC, firmly believes in the benefits of picture books for children and adults alike. She approaches picture books as a powerful art form for young readers. Come hear her speak about why she believes that picture books should become spaces of imagination, empathy, and connection that speak directly to the hearts of children. Many of the Korean authors and illustrators will also share about their creative process and experiences. This will be a very special opportunity to meet and listen to all of them.

As we embark on this journey of discovery together at AFCC 2025, I invite you – readers, creators, educators, and dreamers – to open your minds and hearts to the transformative magic of children’s stories. We hope the many sessions, conversations, and connections you experience will further inspire and encourage you. Let us celebrate the boundless potential of children’s literature to shape not only young minds, but also a more compassionate and creative future for us all. Enjoy the festival!
