With increasing talk of social media bans and mobile device restrictions for teens, a panel of professionals and parents get together to explore our young ones’ relationship to digital media, and what it means for literacy development. How have these media formats impacted reading? Should parents be trying to replace screen time with books in print? And with e-books and other new forms of digital storytelling, what are the ways to encourage meaningful uses of the technology we have?

Daniel Fung

Daniel Fung (Singapore)

Dr Daniel Fung is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a senior consultant at the Department of Developmental Psychiatry at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). He is the Chief Wellness Officer at NHG Health and was former CEO of IMH from 2021-2026. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at all three Singapore medical schools, Immediate Past President of the College of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine Singapore (2021–2025), and Past President of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (2018–2022). Dr Fung has authored 36 books and over 210 peer-reviewed papers. He is widely recognised for developing community mental health programmes and innovative treatments for neurodevelopmental conditions in children.

Elisha Tushara

Elisha Tushara (Singapore)

Elisha Tushara is a correspondent at The Straits Times, where she covers education and community issues. A former secondary school teacher, she made the switch to journalism in May 2023, bringing more than a decade of teaching experience to her craft. As a mother of two and a keen explorer of multimedia tools, Elisha hopes to bring unique insights and uncover meaningful narratives that resonate with readers. Her current interests and focus areas involve managing screentime for children and the use of EdTech tools in Singapore’s education landscape.

Jiow Hee Jhee

Jiow Hee Jhee (Singapore)

Dr Jiow has lectured and trained over 50,000 parents, government leaders on new media topics, both locally and internationally. His research investigates the impact of media on the family, cyber wellness and cybercrime. He has presented academic papers on parental mediation, video gaming and gamification. Dr Jiow currently serves as a member of the Films Consultative Panel and Media Literacy Council, and he teaches in the Communication and Digital Media programme at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). He is also Deputy Director at SIT Teaching and Learning Academy looking into nurturing the applied learning and competency-based education practice.

Kate Brundage

Kate Brundage (US/Singapore)

A veteran educator with 19 years of experience at the Singapore American School, Kate Brundage is an Elementary School Librarian and the International School Libraries Network (ISLN) representative for the AFCC Teachers and Parents Programme Committee.
