The Future World and Us: Preparing Today’s Children for Tomorrow’s Challenges
PresentationNicola Cheong | Moderator: Angela Erickson
Festival Pass| Festival Talk Pass
In an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, it’s more important than ever that we learn to appreciate and understand perspectives beyond our own. Stories offer a way to do just that, helping readers develop awareness and empathy for others, and reminding us that at the end of the day, we are more alike than different.
Learn more about the journey of curating NLB’s first-ever World and Us children’s collection at Punggol Regional Library. From identifying the trends and events that shape children’s publishing to selecting titles that impart the skills and values needed for the “Future World” our children will inhabit, this session will show how global literature–and literature as a whole–has the power to spark imagination, broaden horizons, and build meaningful bridges that connect rather than divide.

Nicola Cheong (Singapore)
Nicola is a librarian with the National Library Board. She works in the Collection Planning and Development team, which helps to select titles for the libraries. As someone passionate about literature, she subscribes to the notion that every book has a value and that there is a reader for every book. In her (very limited) free time, she strives to #readallthebooks, but as of now will settle for having a really awesome TBR booklist.
Angela Erickson (Singapore)
Angela Erickson is Head of Libraries at United World College Dover Campus in Singapore. A former English teacher, her interests include reading culture, global literature, and the role of libraries in shaping empathy and inquiry. Outside of work and reading, she enjoys exploring Singapore’s green spaces and mountaineering.
