First Pages is for new or seasoned writers who would like to share the first page of their unpublished manuscript anonymously with a panel of publishing experts and authors who will provide feedback on the work during the session.

The session prepares both first-time and seasoned children’s book writers for pitching and matching sessions at AFCC.

Formatting Guidelines: 

  • Type the title on the left of the page. The content of the story should follow.
  • Use font size 11 and double-space. (Approximately 200 words will fit in this space.)
  • Margins should be one inch all around.
  • Submit your formatted first page as a MS Word (.doc or .docx) attachment.
  • Upload your manuscript to Dropbox and copy the public link to your Google form. If you have any issues with your submission, contact [email protected]

Submission guidelines: 

  • Writing samples submitted should be from unpublished children’s or YA books.
  • One submission will be accepted per AFCC delegate.
  • Applications that do not meet all guidelines will not be taken into consideration. 

First Pages is open to all AFCC festival pass holders.

First Pages Panelists

Avery Fischer Udagawa (USA/Thailand)

Avery Fischer Udagawa’s translations from Japanese to English include J-Boys: Kazuo’s World, Tokyo, 1965 by Shogo Oketani, House of Trust by Sachiko Kashiwaba in Tomo: Friendship Through Fiction—An Anthology of Japan Teen Stories, and Festival Time by Mogami Ippei in The Best Asian Short Stories 2018. She is the International and Japan Translator Coordinator for SCBWI.

Tina Narang (India)

Tina Narang is the Children’s Publisher at HarperCollins India, having joined to launch the children’s imprint, HarperCollins Children’s Books. Previously, Tina was with Scholastic India from 2005-2017 and has presented three papers at AFCC 2015.

Priti Sharma (Singapore)

Priti Sharma Devata is an associate lecturer at Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) where she teaches Children’s literature and Singaporean literature. She is also an editor of children’s books at Epigram Books.
