Publishing Cross-Cultural Picture Books: Challenges and Perspectives
(Dai Yun)
Global changes in the last two decades mean that the effects of globalisation, and changes in the values and envisioning of the world by a new-generation of parents have drawn more attention to the cultural aspects of children picture books. The two approaches of injecting cultural symbols superficially to cater to the hunger for novelty of some readers, and deliberately eliminating local characteristics for internationalisation are both overkills. This talk will discuss children's publishing, and the creative process by which authors strive to connect good stories with readers' experience and curiosity to open a window to the world for them.
