AFCC Translation Hackathon
Workshop Amanda Ruiqing Flynn, Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar
Put your language skills to the test at the Translation Hackathon jointly organised by Pratham Books and the Singapore Book Council. In the hackathon, we challenge you to translate a picture book into your mother tongue!
This session is supported by the National Translation Committee.
About the Hackathon
Participants will translate a picture books into your language of choice (Chinese, Malay, Tamil). There will be an introductory segment before going into the translation segment. Completed translations will be uploaded onto Pratham Book's StoryWeaver, a platform offering open access books committed to committed to providing children with the very first step to literacy acquisition–books.
Participants are required to bring a digital device for the activity.
Amanda Ruiqing Flynn (Singapore)
Amanda Ruiqing Flynn is a visual artist, writer, literary translator and educator who has lived and worked in the United Kingdom, Taiwan and Singapore. She holds a BA in Chinese and Development Studies from SOAS, University of London and an MFA in Art and Design from National Donghwa University, Taiwan. Her art has been exhibited and collected internationally, and her writing has appeared in Alluvium, PEAK, This Is Southeast Asia and Sploosh. She was a winner of Singapore’s Writing the City Competition 2022 and a judge of the 8th Bai Meigui Translation Competition. On most days, she is chief storyteller to her son.
Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar (Singapore)
Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar has translated children’s picture books, fiction and poetry since 2017. She won the Inaugural MASTERA Translation Prize for Poetry in 2019 and Honourable Mention for Translation at the Golden Poing Award 2023. She has conducted translation workshops for students. She is also an editorial consultant and an author of eleven children’s picture books.
