Nikki Grimes (USA)

Discover the magic of words with bestselling author and poet Nikki Grimes as she shares her writing process and passion for poetry with students. Explore significant themes like friendship and the love of reading through powerful poems from her books. Nikki will also introduce students to two of her favourite poetic forms, tanka and golden shovel poetry, featured in Garvey in the Dark and Legacy: Women Poets from the Harlem Renaissance.
About Nikki Grimes
Bestselling author Nikki Grimes received the Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award, ALAN Award for teen literature, Children's Literature Legacy Medal, NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry, and the Coretta Scott King Award. Recent titles include Legacy: Women Poets of the Harlem Renaissance, Playtime for Restless Rascals, and Garvey in the Dark.
Oliver Phommavanh (Australia)

Oliver Phommavanh has a talent for making people laugh, whether it's through his humorous writing for kids or his stand-up comedy performances. In this session, Oliver will take students on a journey through his personal experiences as a writer, sharing insights into where he finds inspiration and how his teachers helped shape his craft. Students will have the opportunity to ask Oliver questions and learn how to draw ideas from their own experiences. This session is available as a talk or workshop.
About Oliver Phommavanh
Oliver Phommavanh loves to make people laugh, whether it’s on the page writing humour for kids or on stage as a stand-up comedian. He also shares his passion for writing with kids, using his experience as a primary school teacher. Oliver has performed at various comedy and writers festivals around Australia and Asia. Oliver’s recent books include Brain Freeze, Don’t Follow Vee and Natural Born Loser, and he is best known for Thai-riffic!, Con-nerd and The Other Christy.
