Asian Festival of Children’s Content

Second Call for Applications!

Are you a writer and/or illustrator from Southeast Asia or a Tamil/Hindi/Chinese/Malay translator who wants to create amazing picture books for kids? Then join us for an exciting two-day virtual hackathon, jointly organised by Pratham Books and the Singapore Book Council, running up to the 2022 Asian Festival of Children’s Content! Registration is free!

About the Hackathon

Open to all writers and illustrators from Southeast Asia; and Tamil, Hindi, Chinese and Malay translators from Southeast Asia and South Asia. Selected applicants will be required to attend a hackathon workshop over the course of two days. During the workshop, participants will be assigned into groups to produce a picture book.

As part of this hackathon, participants will create simple, engaging bilingual picture books in two days, mentored by the Pratham Books team.

Selected participants will be required to sign a contract, releasing all work created during the hackathon under a CCBY 4.0 licence. This is an open licence that enables access to books to disenfranchised people across the world.

Your work can be in any of these languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Chinese, Malay. The medium of instruction will be English, so a working knowledge of the language will be needed.

How to apply:

You may submit an application under any of the participant profiles listed below:

  • Writers
Please submit a 50-word brief for a picture book manuscript, any piece of published or unpublished writing that demonstrates your skill as a storyteller and your bio to submissions@prathambooks.org with the subject ‘AFCC Build Your Book’.
  • Illustrators
Please submit an original character design, with a small write-up on why you thought of this character, your portfolio and your bio to submissions@prathambooks.org with the subject ‘AFCC Build Your Book’.
