Oral Reading: Bridge Between Spoken and Written Tamil (in Tamil)

Dr Shanmugam K (Head of Tamil Programme, School of Arts & Social Sciences, UniSIM)

Reading aloud to a child is an important aspect in the child’s language development. It also offers a good opportunity to expose the child early on to both spoken and written Tamil within the school setting — if teachers know how to use it. The presenter will share techniques on how teachers can use reading aloud to help bridge the gap between oral and written Tamil.

Create Children’s Stories with Theatre, Music, Illustration (in Tamil)

Malavika PC (Writer, Illustrator (மாளவிகா (எழுத்தாளர், படங்கள் வரைபவர்) )

For: Teachers, educators, parents, storytellers, writers, drama performers

Stories come from imagination and from deep inside a person. The physicality of theatre and creation of music opens oneself to play and shedding walls. The more abandoned a person physically feels the more abandon the stories will reflect. We cannot go back and be children, but we were once children. The memories are in us and our muscles. The workshop will allow us to remember our childhood and imagine new ones.

The Use of Spoken Tamil at Home (in Tamil)

Dr Shanmugam K (Head of Tamil Programme, School of Arts & Social Sciences, UniSIM)

Among many Tamil families, English is the language of choice used predominantly in the home. Tamil is a diglossic language. A child who is not exposed to the spoken language early in life will likely face difficulties learning the written form later in school. The talk will focus on Tamil parents’ responsibility in promoting spoken Tamil.

This session is a part of the Parents Forum.
