Nurturing Bilingualism in School (in Malay)

Dr Mohd Mukhlis (Assistant Professor, National Institute of Education)

Contrary to the idea that two languages confuse people, research has shown that fully developed bilingualism actually enhances one's “cognitive flexibility”. A bilingual is able to see things from two or more perspectives and is able to understand better how other people think. Unfortunately, school classrooms remain largely monolingual spaces where students have little opportunity to engage in tasks bilingually. This session will explore how schools can provide learning opportunities in two languages to assist learners to become bilingual.

Workshop:
DIY Wordless Picture Books (in Malay)

Fazeila Isa (Lecturer, Early Childhood and Special Education, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris)

For: Parents

Wordless picture books have become a phenomenon in children’s literacy, especially in the United States and Australia, as richness in visual literacy can help children develop metacognitive skills. As we are now aware, we are living in a highly complex visual-based environment and using such material can be a stepping stone to attract children’s attention and develop interest in reading. Within the 3 hours workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand and be aware of the functions and importance of using wordless picture books in educating children.
  2. Be able to ‘DIY’ wordless picture books with any materials they have.
  3. Master the process of story-telling using their own ‘DIY’ books.
